We have dedicated midwives based at Dunbar Medical Centre who provide the majority of antenatal care to pregnant women. It is advised to take folic acid 400mcg daily when trying to conceive or, if unplanned, to start it as soon as you realise you are pregnant. It is also advised to take Vitamin D 10mcg daily. These are available at the pharmacy.
If you find out you are pregnant then you can self-refer to arrange your first midwife appointment which will be around 8-10 weeks and an ultrasound scan around 11-14 weeks. To make an appointment call NHS Lothian Maternity Services on 0131 536 2009. Lines are open Monday to Friday from 9am to 4.45pm. Select the option that lets you make an appointment. If you require an interpreter for these appointments, this will also be booked at the time.
If you have any pre-existing medical issues such as epilepsy, diabetes or thyroid disorders or you are taking any regular medication, then it is advisable to speak to one of the GPs to plan your pregnancy to ensure your condition is well managed and in case changes to medication needs to be considered.
Unplanned pregnancy is very common and if you are not sure whether you wish to continue with the pregnancy then you can discuss this confidentially with a GP or directly with experienced staff at Chalmers, the Lothian Sexual Health Clinic. Their self-referral information is available on this link
